JANUARY, 22th
Weather conditions are the real challenge in these days. The wind is light, there are showers all around us, the boat sail slow, TWA is always changing and keep on going on it is quite difficult.
We manouvre the sails at our best, sometimes we had to drop off the gennaker and hoist the genoa, because the TWA, in order to have still the right course to Rio, was too close to the wind. The rain comes after the wind, that blows stronger, but when the clouds pass by, the wind lower again, the sun makes grow the humidity and to be focused on sails and on the course becomes hard.
But this strange weather makes also beautiful gifts, such as lights and unique atmospheres, rainbows with bright colours.
The night is more difficult, no moon, when the rain comes we are always a bit more concentrated than during the day,we try to be ready on every kind of manouvres we should make if the TWA changes or there are gusts.
Next updates, on life on bord of Almagores, tomorrow, stay tuned.
Anjo:
And onwards the white stallion sails, sometimes meandering In calm and tranquil waters, surrounded by fluffy white clouds and gentle breezes and at others, she roars downwind through the night, slicing the ocean as the strong winds pucker at her sails. She has but one goal and it has never changed. To Rio she will sail with her happy crew Team Anjo.
Ciao Bella – JM BUSHA 54 SAILING TEAM:
Coming to you from approximately 460nm away from the finish!
Mojie:
ST 28, SS 2, AT 37, AP 1014.3
Mojie appears to have entered the outer periphery of the northern secondary low pressure system. We are tentatively proceeding at a reduced speed, monitoring wind speed, gusts and Barometric Pressure changes. We were visited by two birds in the night, and have sailed past two large bait balls with 10+ terms circling each. The galloping nimbus clouds we are used to now have a large stratus backdrop across the sky.
From the blog:
How this race has twists and turns. Prior to embarking, the South Atlantic Race was described to us by many an offshore expert. It went something like this: your first four to five days out of Cape Town will be intense, guaranteed days of 30+ knot winds, with wet and cold sailing. Then you will hit the trade winds. Easy down wind sailing, but hot, until your final reach into Rio which is the easy part, just hope the winds don’t drop too much around Cabo Frio.
In reality, we were becalmed on our first night out of Cape Town and spent 10 days heading north looking for these elusive trade winds. When we finally got into them, admittedly the sailing was awesome, but we spent a lot of our time trying to go north to find more wind. Now we find ourselves still going north to find less wind and avoid the Sub Tropical Storm Kurumi in our path???? What happened to our easy reach into Rio de Janeiro? Such are the vagaries of offshore sailing.
Myrtle of Bonnievale:
Increasing our sail armour. Yesterday the tracker probably showed us going south for an hour, because we did. PK went up the mast again and Pietman controlled his swinging from the mast with different ropes and winches. the jib/genoa sail foil which was epoxy glued at a join about 10 days ago, had some hardened epoxy to be sanded off on the outside before the sail can be roller furled. The operation worked and we now have the furling genoa working gain for the first time in 2 weeks. The furling genoa can be used in a wide range of wind as the size of the sail can be adjusted by rolling up part of it .
Wind is getting slightly stronger. Every one is happy on board. We keep an eye on Kurumi, the storm, by looking at her on the grib files.
Love to all.
Pierre Albertyn
JML Rotary Scout:
From the blog: Unfortunately we discovered that we only had 5kg of gas left after an apparent leak on the connection at the bottles so we are being very conservative with our gas usage now and braiing a lot more. The only problem is with braaing home made bread which is quite tricky as it either burns or doesn’t cook at all. Our perishable foods such as carrots and apples were also pretty vrot so we had to donate them to the fish overboard. At least we have lots of canned food to fall back on but we have been somewhat spoilt with our meals so far. Ewan and Matt were put under pressure to come up with some creative recipes by their watch partners while Mika and Matt took to playing card games to take their minds off tinned food.
Northern Light:
A Very happy birthday to Maggie Kroon for yesterday!
From the blog: The Baroness chilled a bottle Mumm Champagne for my B’Day Mainlanders!!! Sipped with a Ginger Beef Aged Sirloin on Mash (Not Smash racers, REAL potato with milk and butter). This was followed by Carin and Linda’s Trice Baked, Half-the-ingredients-on-the-counter (Bad helmsman) Chocolate Cake (Not an energy bar racers, real cake with egg and flour) and a Red wine pairing (Not in a papsak racers, in a glass bottle, not a screw top, cork.) The finale, a cup of freshly ground filter coffee (really, actually ground on board) with a homemade date ball. The music played at full volume till 10pm. Matthys Roets, Macy Gray, Metallica and then Phil Collins. I was alone on deck when Ave Maria started playing and Venus shined a bright, silvery path ahead. A thousand miles from Brazil, Two thousand six hundred from home. What a privileged birthday!
Saravah:
Winds have been varying a lot today. Every boat is now positioning himself for the low ahead. Strategies differ, and as a result, boats are spread through a wide area of the ocean.
The low now seems not that strong for the boats who choose to attack it through its northern part (us included). We have been preparing boat and crew for it, and hope that everyone can make it safely to Rio.
The question now is: what will happen next? Big changes in the wind are expected, and they can have a huge impact in the final position. Weather GRIBs are awaited, studied and debated. The finish line is approaching, and the stakes are building high.
Right now we are abeam of Trindade Island, only 30 miles away. Brazil very near!
Kurumi has just reached us at 21deg 09’S 029deg 16’W at aprox 14:30 GMT with winds of 30 knots. All well on board.
Saravah!
