Parallel living
On bord there are two universes, with avery similar kind of life, these are the mounting and dismountig watches, that meet each other few minutes every switch, just to say which is the course, the TWA and maybe some words if someone succeeded in manouvring, a gybe or simply a sheet regulation, after that, each goes for his way again.
As the sailing, in these days is quite and slow, the wind blows light, the course is right, the only thing we have to do, when we are watch on, is to be able to anticipate the things to do,so that the new watch can only steer.
We are 13 on board, two crews of 6 people each for the watches, that, as parallel universes, have their trait d’union in Nicole, whose, out of watch, can make a connexion between these two worlds, so far and so close at the same time, during lunch and dinner, a very good break for some relax and sharing.
Anjo:
BECALMED and not even Wilson to talk to. 4knts of wind in the SE Trade highway, phhhhhh. Things we do know: there is no ice cream onboard, the saloon beats the port aft cabin in snoring (but just) 350 Lt fresh drinking water has been consumed and the Stbd watch managed to discharge our spoons overboard leaving us with chopsticks and some forks. Good news is Rio mid summers sales will be in full swing inmid March when we arrive. Currently bobbing around this part of the S Atlantic to the tunes of the good old Beatles…..
Indulgence:
Thursday 23/01 – 1205nm to go to Rio !! Everything running smooth on Indulgence and all on track. Enough food, enough water and no mechanical issues. Saving one pack of Boerewors and 9 Zamaleks for braai as soon as we finish 🙂 Weather excelent and wind good – occasionally too little but making ok-ish average speeds. Another piece of info: We just changed time zones again, we now GMT-2 (4 hours behind SA) We having another 25hr day today – nice if you can stretch days
Mojie:
ST 28, SS 1, AT 37, AP 1015.9
Mojie is reaching under increasingly cloudy skies as we start to enter the outer periphery of the northern secondary low pressure system. We passed north of Is Martin Vaz and Ilha da Trinidade in the night and are awaiting the latest updated weather forecasts. The final checks on all our safety and storm gear have been made and we believe we are ready for what lies ahead.
From the blog: The ritual of the mid afternoon salt shower seems to be entrenching itself – the swimming platform is lowered and we take turns pouring cool sea water over ourselves carefully using the last remaining bucket. It’s not the same as the day of our 1-2 knot swimming session, but it provides welcome relief to the heat. Even 26 degree sea water feels cool when the air temperature is 37 degrees in the shade. As for the sauna that the saloon has become, it is almost obligatory to remove shirts, buffs and hats, unless you want to generte the same amount of sweat as a 10km run after about a minute. A brief rinse under the outside shower signifies an end to the coolness. Perspiration reactivated!
Mussulo 40 – Team Angolan Cables:
Everything Ok!
regards
Jose
Myrtle of Bonnievale:
We had winds below 10 knots the past 24 hours. Progress slow. Lize went for a swim an hour ago and swam faster than we could sail. We are aware of the heavy weather forecasted for the area to the north west of us. We are keeping an eye on that.
Everyone is happy. It is hot, very hot. Last night PK and Pietman braai(ed) some chops and sausage outside.
Boat speed 5 knots, Wind from 80 deg M, at 11 knots, Barometer 1021, cloud cover 20%, Outside temperature 29,2 deg C, Water temperature 28,7 deg C.
Love to all from all aboard.
Pierre Albertyn
Ronin:
Well a blessing in disguise is that we are not further ahead and near the low. All good onboard but I would give anything to be cold again. Definitely not a tropical guy??
JML Rotary Scout:
We’ve been climbing up to a higher latitude as there is a high pressure with little wind developing ahead of us that we want to avoid. Once we get up to level with the Trinidad islands at about 20 degrees we then plan to start curving round to Rio. The GRIB files we’ve been downloading have been quite accurate after experiencing the weather that they predict and it looks like there’s a bit of a storm developing off the coast in a week’s time so we should hopefully have good winds then.
We had a pleasant surprise yesterday when we had a sudden downpour which allowed us to soap up on deck and have our first decent fresh water shower on the trip. There have been several suggestions previously that once we are close enough to Rio we can use our drinking water to shower so the timing was good. Even those on the helm at the time managed to multitask as they steered and washed themselves at the same time. Unfortunately two of our crew members in their bunks down below were a little slow in getting on deck for the occasion and after having just soaped up the rain suddenly stopped so they had to use seawater to wash off which didn’t amuse them.
Saravah:
Yesterday we started to see more clouds and more downpours (“pirajás” in Portuguese). Now we alternate light winds (around 10 knots) with sudden gusts of more than 20. But we kept the spinnaker up all the time. Sign of changes to come…
We have dedicated a lot of our time thinking about the weather system that we will face, and the best way to pass it. Need to balance trying to shortcut through the storm, picking a shorter route to the finish line, or sailing around the whole system and avoiding the strongest winds. The boat is well prepared and we have been checking and securing everything, and the storm sails are ready to be set in case of necessity. We believe to be well positioned, but we have been worried about some boats to the south, and hope they will face it well.
To mark the 1000 miles to the finish, we had guava with vanilla custard. Great! But our bacon is gone. Incredible effort has been made by Phil to keep us well fed and comfortable. With great success! We will all finish heavier than we started!
Saravah!
