Team Anjo trucking West to try and make the prize-giving. Need some luck and wind.
Ciao Bella – JM BUSHA 54 SAILING TEAM:
Not to worry about the JMBUSHA team as they have been informed about the storm and will keep sailing as phenomenally as they have been and keep taking on the challenges. They sailed 197NM in the last 24hrs?
Mojie:
We experienced an uneventful night of fresh winds, with sustained boat speed in the 8-9 knot range, under spectacular stars. 6 or 7 shooting stars were reported and we got to see a minute slice of the crescent moon disappear as the sun rose behind a cumulo nimbus cloud formation. We have had 3 significant strikes on our trawling line – with the last very large fish taking the whole hook and breaking the line. Mojie is heading towards Is Martin Vaz and Ilha da Trinidade, cautiously watching developments around Sub-Tropical Storm Kurumi.
From the blog: Given the potential severity of what lies ahead in our future, Team Mojie chose a more conservative, risk managed approach to our routing yesterday. At the start of the day, our upcountry sailor Richard was right in his element and showed us why he he excels in the Vaal Dam Around the Island Race. This was dam sailing at its best, but in smooth South Atlantic waters, surrounded by cumulo nimbus hills, with occasional squall steroids providing excitement now and then. After a morning of reaching with our assymmetric spinnakers, we decided to push further north to mitigate the potential weather risk. We dropped the asymms, brought out our J3 jib and started beating west north west. The benefit of being further north had clearly paid a handsome dividend for the Ciao Bellans, and all of a sudden, Mojie found herself fighting a classic rearguard defence, with the marauding Umoya and Argonaut snapping at our heels. So much for the Battle of Jutland. This is starting to feel like the Battle of Midway Island. And we seem to be flying the colours of the Land of the Rising Sun. How could this be? And what can we now do to avoid defeat?
Myrtle of Bonnievale:
MAN OF THE MATCH
In a team at the end of the match, a man of the match is chosen. It is not the end of this race yet, but I can clearly declare who the Man of the match is on Myrtle of Bonnievale. All the crew are worthy contenders and are doing their work superbly. The Man of the Match is Sonja Albertyn, my wife.
After being first on the foredeck for a sail change, after finding supplies stowed wherever, after preparing meals, after being the doctor on board, after lifting the spirit on the boat with kind words, after cleaning up and wiping the floors, after stowing everything and keeping the boat tidy, then I think: Sonja, I hope you can go and get rest now. Then I look over the helm station and there she is creeping on the foredeck with a roll of duct tape to tape the sharp edges of the guard rails to prevent the spinnaker from chafing.
That is my wife. Sonja. You don’t get them better. Man of the Match!!!
All well on board.
Love to all.
Pierre Albertyn
Ronin:
Had a slow 24 hrs. Only 105nm. As of 1400 the wind has filled in nicely. Looks like not being to far ahead at the moment might be a blessing in disguise. Looks hectic along the coast.??
Saravah:
With less than one week to the finish, the race is incredibly tight, with 3 boats fighting for the lead mile after mile, and 2 other close by, waiting for a passing opportunity. There is a big weather system between us and the finish line, and this chess table is changing with every new weather update. The position report from the other boats, released for us by the RC only at 16 GMT, is the most awaited time of the day. Temperature is rising, on the thermometer and on the crew. Pressure is building. In 48 hours we will need to decide where to cross the low. Critical decision!
Meanwhile life on board goes on. It’s incredible how easily we adapt to the routine of our shifts. Good food (thanks Phil) and good mood onboard. Weather has been incredibly nice on us for the past 5 days. Spinnaker up all the time, and now a tight reach with the boat heeled over.
This race has been amazing, and looks like it will keep like that until the end!
Saravah!
