News from the fleet:
(Messages are relayed as received)

Adriana:
Regarding yesterday’s report: Sorry for the delay, we did drink some nice wine yesterday
Today: Keeping on the wind zone
Best regards
Mojie:
Lighter winds (10 knots) as we approach the high pressure system, and apart from further spinnaker repairs (all successful) and a misbehaving halyard, we are enjoying our sauna below deck. All ice supplies now depleted.
Mussulo 40 – Team Angolan Cables:
Now everything Ok!During the night we loose one balloon in 32 knots gust and we can’t put it down during the night. Only in he morning when wind went to 22-23 climbed the mast and cut the spy… Coming back to the course now….
BEST regards
Jose
Myrtle of Bonnievale:
As the days of the race start to add up, one’s arsenal of sails are getting smaller. A few days ago our working spinnaker were torn beyond an onboard repair. A few other sails looks like we are sponsored by band Aid strips – patched quite heavily. I suspect the sail makers in Rio are awaiting the fleet with open arms.
Last night Sonja prepared delicious pan fried steaks. This morning Inge is eating pink porridge for breakfast. I had a sandwich.
We are continuing south, will tack tomorrow.
Cloud cover = 20%, Wind strength = 16 knots, Wind from 95 deg, Barometer 1022, Wave height 2,5 meter, Outside temperature 27.5 deg C, Water temperature 27.1 deg C.
Everyone is happy. PK is busy repairing the Ice machine which does not want to cooperate any more. Pietman and Inge is off shift and tanning on the fore deck, mentioned something about preparing for Copacabana Beach. Lize is at the helm. Sonja is cleaning and organising.
Love to all.
Pierre Albertyn
Almagores II:
JANUARY, 17th
The wind is still blowing strong, today we switch the watches and bring back the boat time of 1 hour. 3 reefs and heavy jib, sea force 4, good visibilty.
On board we are all a bit tired, some strange behaviuors made their appearance, long bearded men undecided if to cut it or not, someone that see,( but I cannot say who) in the middle of a real dark night, stange lights in the sky and saying he saw UFO ☻ and there are also “little mice “ ☺that during the day and the night, watches on or off,eat chocolate and others snacks…
Last but not least, our dj, that keep high the feeling on board during the watches on,with beautiful playlists ♫♪.
The good mood is always high on board of Almagores II.
Anjo:
Team Anjo wishes all family and friends mutch love today. The long game strategy to food went missing and none of the crew knew anything about it, so
Ballyhoo Too:
Hi all
A bit of an update so far: we had two lovely days sailing on the 15th and 16th in light breezes flying spinnakers and code 0, the boat was a joy to sail and we made really good time.
The weather hit us very early morning on the 17th, which was pretty severe. There was no moon and overcast, so pitch black. The wind was 30-37 knots and a huge and confused sea. The sea state was the main concern. There where two big swells running, on with the wind and one at right angles and when they met the result was very large, very steep peaks with breaking crests.
We had a double reefed main and no 4 up and we still were very over powered, constantly surfing and reach top speeds of over 19knts. It was a wild run in full survival mode. These conditions continued into the next day and we changed the no 4 to a storm jib. Eventually in the evening conditions moderated, but the sea was still a mess. The motion of the boat was even worse with less wind, and the pitching an rolling resulted in me taking a bad fall and it appears I have cracked a few ribs, which makes everything quite painful. Luckily there are plenty of painkillers on board.
To add to the sick list, Stoff has a an infected hand which has swollen up quit dramatically. He went onto antibiotics yesterday, hopefully we see some improvement soon.
To add to drama, yesterday evening we tried putting a reef in the main, as the weather has been very unsettled at night. However the main halyard was jammed and we could not get the sail down so spent last night with just the main and storm jib up just in case the wind got up.
On further inspection this morning it appears that the main halyard anti chafe casing has separated from the halyard and is jamming in the shieve at the top of the mast. The plan is for one of us to go to the top of the mast and rig and external halyard , maybe tomorrow or the next day when we are hopefully feeling better. We are sailing very conservatively until we have done this, and are currently running under a poled out no3.
On the positive side, our autopilot repair is holding out well and is currently helming beautifully!
This race is certainly shaping us to be the adventure of a lifetime!
Ciao Bella – JM BUSHA 54 SAILING TEAM:
Blog post by Ryan Robinson.
“Me: Moji Moji, this is the yacht Ciao Bella, Ciao Bella. do you copy?
Moji: This is the yacht Moji, we hear you loud and clear.
Me: *said with audible excitement* Requesting permission to pass you on the inside
Moji: uhm… … permission denied.
Me: Requesting Permission to beat you to Rio.
Moji: With my deepest regrets, Permission denied.
Moji: Unless you would be willing to trade? Do you have Ice on your Boat?
Me: No, unfortunatley we ran out of Ice 2 weeks ago…”
Saravah:
The race changed completely, from a drag race at beam reach to a dead downwind sail with plenty of jibes. The seas are now down to 2-3m and we have blue skies with ocasional cumulus clouds. The sea temperature went up to 28 degrees and outside temperature is also up, so life onboard is hotter.
Today the maintenance list was big: toilets, bilge pumps, spinnaker halyards, mainsail sheet, spinnaker repairs (we are using them all the time) and so on… Without a complete workshop onboard, the sailor has to work with whatever material and tools reach his hands. So today we used Lavoisier rule and a coffee maker lid was transformed into a macerator impeller.
We have just passed the halfway sign, and today we shall be overtaking the last boat of the first start. It hasn’t been easy sailing, as our sails have a very narrow range of angles that demand constant adjustments. Our brave crew has been working around the clock and hasn’t got much sleep. You can notice they are tired, but the flow of histories and jokes is unstoppable. And we are having a great time, despite all the work and discomfort.
Saravah!
