JANUARY, 25th
We reached the tail of the intense frontal system forecasted some days ago, the sea increased, during the day, from force 4 to force 6, swells around that keep the boat the way they want.
The wind blows constantly around 20 kns, but during the intense showers we had, it blowed with gusts reaching 35 kns.We sail with 3 reefs and heavy jib,but , on deck, the storm jib is ready to be hoisted.
Boat speed is 12 kns average, a on course to Rio.
Watches keep on changing every 4 hours, it’s hard, sleeping is difficult, the boat rolls, jumps on the swells, beeing out on watch is difficult too, the rain sometimes falls so heavy that the drops hurt on our faces, steering is tough, it’s a fight against the sea and the wind.
At the end of every watch on, we are all wet.
During the night everything becomes still, no more wind, only the rain and the swells, but, finally, the watch out can rest and sleep and this is a very good moment for everybody.
Argonaut:
Just shaken both of our reefs – went from northerly winds of 25kts gusting to 40 to now westerly winds of 5 to 10kts. Boat has taken a bit of a hammering.Crew all varying stages of tired and smelly – we’ll be getting a watermaker for next time. Very excited to be in Rio/Brazil and really looking forward to first beer/caprinha. Currently lighting fire tomake our last braai – well braai with meat. We are craving grapes from woolworths.
CFM2 – Zulu GIrl Racing Powered by Mazi:
Good evening everyone
Just an update on what happened this morning: We were hit by a thunderstorm that lasted about 2 hours, we saw winds of up to 70 knots that caught us off-guard. We were 2 sail reaching when it hit us. We managed to snap the steering quadrant lines and currently sailing on emergency tiller. We have one crew member that has burnt his foot with boiling water, we are managing his situation. Other that the crew on the boat are all well and healthy and the boat is safe and sound. We have performed a thorough check on the crew and boat we are happy that she can still compete, so as it stands our intentions are to continue racing.
Kind regards
Siyanda Vato

We exited the storm system around 2am and the change in air temperature, 140 degree shift in wind direction and subsequent 2hr tropical downpour were as if a switch had been flicked. We have light winds and calm seas, and are making our way past rain squalls and seeking the path of most wind into Rio de Janeiro. Ships time adjusted to Bravo – 5 = UTC – 3
From the blog: Since every single hatch has been shut, the sauna conditions in the Saloon have intensified. Humidity is 99%, trending to 100%. Due to the ever aggravated heel of our trusty starboard tack, one new source of ventilation did present itself today – a cool vent of air started rising from the galley sink. The seacock that usually lets our sink waste water blend subtly with the ocean is now exposed and sucking in cool, fresh sea air. If only one could stand in the galley long enough to cool down.
Myrtle of Bonnievale:
LICKING OUR WOUNDS
Kurumi is hopefully, according to our grib files, a thing of the past in the next 2 hours. Sailing the past few days on her outskirts, she gave us good strong winds and most of the time, from the right direction too.
Last night the wind increased on 2 different shifts to 30 knots with heavy rain. That was hard and we have a few emotional wounds but luckily no physical wounds. This is not your typical Cape to Rio winds. Nature always have a surprise.
All on board happy to see the end of this soon.
Love to all from all aboard.
Pierre Albertyn
JML Rotary Scout:
From the blog: During our lunchtime watch we were cruising along the South Atlantic at 8-10 knots with the spinnaker up. About 45 mins into the watch we hit a squall. When a squall hits we experience strong winds and rain. We gave the call for all hands on deck and the spinnaker was quickly dropped and repacked, ready for its next hoist. Unfortunately this didn’t happen again. Over the last 12 hours we have experienced winds of 15-22 knots which is too much for our light-weight spinnaker.
We sailed for the rest of the day with our genoa poled out, averaging a comfortable speed of 7 knots. Around 01h00 we started to become overpowered and couldn’t sail on track well enough. Josh was due to come on watch at 02h00 so he came up and helped us drop the pole and drop the main sail to first reef. We were still holding speeds of 6-8 knots. While surfing down a wave, Mika hit the new top record of 14.4 knots!
Ronin:
Just had a 190 nm run. That’s more like it. Pressure dropped and wind up in the 20 plus range. Fantastic sailing. ? Caught a small yellow fin tuna just past Trinidade just after sunset.Sushi tonight?
Saravah:
The last 24 hours we spent playing with Kurumi (small boy in tupi-guarani) and it was a rough time, oh boy it was! Wind was steady at 30 knots and waves at 3-4m. The numbers don’t impress, but the angle of the wind was tight so it was worse than the 40 knots that we dealt with almost 10 days ago. We can better describe the sea state as “very uncomfortable” and life onboard was a little better than “miserable”, as the boat was leaning over too much and moving a lot with fast lurches. Our main sail has only one reef and it was too much, but that’s what we have here, so we had to deal with the weapons we had. Reefed main and genoa 4 made our beast difficult to tame.
It’s incredible to think that the center of the storm passed some 1500 miles south of our position, so it was really a huge storm! We don’t regret having taken a longer way to cross it more to the north. But at 10:30 GMT this morning it suddenly disappeared, leaving us floating in a calm and trying many tacks to get our heading closer to Rio.
Amazing how tactical this race has been! And seems that it will be tight to the very end. We will see some split in the fleet this afternoon, and only time will tell what really was the best choice. And time is running short, as we expect to finish in only 2 days. Let’s wait and see. Nerve wracking!
Saravah!
