Sponsored by Masarati in 2017, the weather again took its toll on the competitors of this edition. Two days after the start, Trekker II, skippered by legendary South African sailor Bertie Reed at the 1982 Cape2Rio and Mark Wannenberg in the 2017 edition, ran into trouble when a rudder was damaged. At first the yacht issued a pan-pan call – a signal that a boat is in a state of urgency, but no immediate danger exists – but this was later upgraded to a mayday. Two commercial vessels were in the area and responded immediately to the distress signal, with the eight crew members of Trekker II being quickly rescued and transferred onto MV Golafruz.
Runaway was the first to cross the finish line in 12 days 15 hours and 4 minutes. Black Pearl won on handicap followed by Runaway and Lion of Africa Vulcan.
A notable entry was the all-woman crew from the Indian Navy on INSV Mhadei who reached Rio in a new record time for a women-only crew of 21 days. This was the first all-women crew to man any ocean-going ship of the Indian Navy.
