- I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in joining a crew for the upcoming Cape2Rio race. As a 22-year-old South African sailor with over 15,400 nautical miles logged—including offshore deliveries, Caribbean passages, and South African coastal transits—I am eager to apply my racing experience, dedication, and deep-rooted passion for sailing to one of the most iconic ocean races in the Southern Hemisphere. My sailing career began at age 15 when I discovered competitive dinghy racing. Since then, I’ve grown into a versatile offshore sailor with a Yachtmaster Ocean certification and extensive solo watch experience. Notably, I’ve served as First Mate for Halcyon Yachts, completing six back-to-back European yacht deliveries totaling 6,200nm in just three months. I’ve co-skippered a full Caribbean transit aboard S/Y Ocean Spirit, and worked as a deckhand on the 48m passenger schooner S/Y Vela, where I completed 21 Caribbean cruises and supported everything from sail handling to engineering. With over 700 hours of solo night watches and 540 days at sea, I thrive under pressure and bring calm focus to demanding offshore environments. Whether managing rig checks, anchoring in high swell, or solving systems failures mid-passage, I bring a problem-solving mindset and a “get-stuck-in” attitude. I’ve also logged racing passages along the South African coast, including a mileage trip from Cape Town to Durban as First Mate aboard S/Y Benguela. I’m highly motivated, physically fit, and ready to contribute wherever needed—from bow work to provisioning to engineering support. More than just a job or a line on a résumé, sailing is the heart of my life, and the Cape2Rio represents a dream opportunity to challenge myself, learn from top crews, and race across the South Atlantic.
