- Fryd Entrant #6. was a Najad 415p Performance Cruiser from Norway. I was appointed as the Foredeck on the yacht. We set sail on the 28th of December 2024, throughout our journey we had some beautiful weather along with some rough conditions too. We went through a total of about 6 Tropical Squalls and had a close call but we managed to work through it and get out of the squalls safely. We were 3 crew on board and had a 4 hours on, 8 hours off shift system. Upon my arrival on St. Helena Island I met the delivery skipper and the crew to prepare for the return trip to Cape Town. The trip was estimated to take 16-22 days. We were five crew on board. We set sail on the 14th of January 2025 on the yacht Umoya, a Simonis 35. The first 3 days out of St. Helena we came across strong winds and rough sea conditions, the trip was mostly up wind sailing. We had been told that just a few days before our departure from St. Helena the water-maker had broken down. Once we hit the high pressures a fellow crew member and myself took on the challenge to try repair the water-maker. We spend hours trying to figure out what could possibly be wrong. After about 4-5 days at sea, the water maker was repaired and the crew finally had water we could use to shower and wash dishes. Throughout our time on the water we uncovered many more faults on the yacht such as intermittent instruments, broken Navigation, Tri, Steam, and Deck lights, a non-functioning autopilot and a lot of water leaks. This definitely made the trip harder but we managed to push through and carry on sailing to our destination. Due too the autopilot not working we had a 4 hours on, 4 hours off shift system with 2 crew on each shift. We also had a so called mother system aswell, were one of the crew cook and clean while the rest sail the yacht, this was a rotating system. Even though we had it rough on this trip the crew got along amazingly, motivating and cheering each other on. Overall a rough yet valuable and amazing experience with lots of memories made and many new skills learnt. It's not the yacht that matters, it's the crew.
